Scientists from the University of Madrid, Sergio Pastrana and Guillermo Suarez-Tangil, conducted a study according to which Monero (XMR) is the most popular cryptocurrency among hackers. According to scientists, hackers produced at least 4.5% of total tokens.
“In general, according to our estimates, there are 2,218 active miners who mined about 720,000 XMR ($57 million). Interestingly, only one was able to get more than 163 thousand XMR ($18 million), which is 23% of the total. This botnet remains active at the time of this writing.”
Scientists are not sure whether the owners of hidden miners managed to cash out their cryptocurrency. There is no information, because the currency is anonymous, and price fluctuations were not noticed.
Researchers analyzed 4.4 million malware samples over a 12-year period from 2007 to 2018. They identified 1 million hidden mining programs. Such software is usually distributed using legitimate infrastructure, GitHub and Dropbox, for example. Miner can be glued with the stock tool for the extraction of cryptocurrency.
The second most popular among hackers is Bitcoin. Its popularity has decreased over the years, but its illegal mining is actively developing. Hackers experimented with other Altcoins, such as Dogecoin or Litecoin during 2013–2014, after which Monero and Bitcoin again became involved. Monero and Bitcoin are followed by ZCash, which is in third place.
In December, Intel Security division, McAfee, published data, according to which, the number of hidden mining programs increased by 4,000% over the past year.
During November, ICO-projects sold 416K ETH. This is the largest figure since the summer, reports Trustnodes.
